Kojak Variety Rehearsal Notes:
This disc consists of rehearsals conducted by EC, the Attractions, Marc Ribot, and James Burton
in Paris in late March 1995 for the May 17, 1995 "world tour in a day" intended to promote KOJAK VARIETY.
They rehearse nearly the entire show in order. Only EC\'s solo set, "I\'ve Been Wrong Before," and "Alison" are missing.

This collection of tracks from the Kojak Variety Rehearsal came to me (thank you my friend) in Flac format, they originate from cassette tapes, the equipment and software used for the transfer is unknown.
It came with notes for each track that I have tried my best to verify and add to (thank you to the original researcher, excellent job).
Should any of this information be incorrect please let me know by personal message.

Watercamp Notes:
Up to this point the compilations have been collections of recordings grouped chronologically around the main album of the period.
The 1990\'s saw EC working on some projects as in the past, while returning to others over a period of years.
Moving forward the compilations will reflect this change by combining chronology and theme.
Starting with the Kojak Variety compilation which features the album and one bonus track recorded in 1990 (but only released in 1995) plus the bootlegs of the 1995 rehearsal and the one show your itself.

WHAT\'S MISSING (RELEASED RECORDINGS)

COULDN\'T CALL IT UNEXPECTED NO. 4 (LIVE) The singles included a brief but amusing spoken intro ("Look out, music lovers. I\'m going to play the piano.")

VERONICA / THE WAYS OF LOVE (LIVE, MOUNTAIN VIEW, OCT. 26, 1990)
[The Bridge School Collection, Vol. 2 iTunes download]
Coming from the same show as "Alison," this performance incorporates a snippet of Neil Young\'s "The Ways Of Love," a song otherwise unrecorded by Elvis. (This was released as an iTunes exclusive in 2006, long after Rhino\'s Mighty Like A Rose.)

WHAT\'S MISSING (UNRELEASED & UNRECORDED)

PLAYBOY TO A MAN (HOME DEMO)
This was included in a preliminary track listing for the Mighty Like A Rose bonus disc but did not make the final cut. This was recorded by Elvis alone and should not be confused with the duet version included on the bootleg The McCartney/MacManus Collaboration (which I have listed on the Spike page).

TRAMP THE DIRT DOWN (1991 VERSION)
Elvis has frequently reworked his songs in concerts, but the changes are not ordinarily as drastic as the 1991 reworking of "Tramp The Dirt Down" which incorporated quite a few new lyrics to update the story. It seems very unlikely that this was ever formally recorded.

[The Juliet Letters DVD)

WHAT\'S MISSING (UNRELEASED & UNRECORDED)

SCARLET RIBBONS (LIVE)
FAVOURITE HOUR (LIVE)
The concert repertoire for Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet was relatively limited during the 1992-1997 period (in large part due to the fact that most of their concerts included the entirety of The Juliet Letters, which left little time for other selections).
The vast majority of their songs are included on the reissue in either studio or live renditions.
"Scarlet Ribbons" (the Evelyn Danzig/Jack Segal-penned song associated with Harry Belafonte and the Browns, among others) and "Favourite Hour," however, were rarely performed,
and it is conceivable that they were never professionally recorded.

HAVING IT ALL (LIVE) Elvis Costello & The Punishing Kiss Band
PUNISHING KISS (LIVE) Elvis Costello & The Punishing Kiss Band
These are just two of the most interesting songs from Elvis\' June 28, 1995 set with The Punishing Kiss Band, which is represented by just one song on the bonus disc.
"Having It All" has only been released in demo form (on the King Of America bonus disc). "Punishing Kiss" is a song Elvis and Cait O\'Riordan wrote for Annie Ross which has yet to be officially released in an Elvis-sung version (although a demo does exist).
Also performed: "The Long Honeymoon," "New Lace Sleeves," "Almost Blue," "London\'s Brilliant Parade,""Lost In The Stars," "Shipbuilding," and "Favourite Hour," plus an instrumental "Stalin Malone" performed without Elvis.

Watercamp Notes:
Previously the compilations have been collections of recordings grouped chronologically around the main album of the period.
The 1990\'s saw EC working on some projects as in the past, while returning to others over a period of years.
Moving forward the compilations will reflect this change by combining chronology and theme.
The Juliet Letters compilation featuring The Brodsky Quartet contains the album recorded in 1992 plus various live and studio performances stretching to 2002.

WHAT\'S MISSING (RELEASED RECORDINGS)

DISTORTED ANGEL (ALTERNATE VERSION)
The first song attempted by the reunited Attractions went unused on Brutal Youth and was re-recorded for All This Useless Beauty. LONDON\'S BRILLIANT PARADE (CHURCH STUDIOS VERSION)
This is mentioned in Elvis\' liner notes as among the "good exploratory versions" of Brutal Youth songs recorded in December 1992 with Steve and Pete.

Watercamp Notes:
Previously the compilations have been collections of recordings grouped chronologically around the main album of the period.
The 1990\'s saw EC working on some projects as in the past, while returning to others over a period of years.
Moving forward the compilations will reflect this change by combining chronology and theme.
The All This Useless Beauty compilation stretches over a period of 3 years starting with live recordings from the Meltdown Festival, then the soundtrack Jake\'s Progress and finally All This Useless Beauty and the live shows, as well as many other side projects.

WHAT\'S MISSING (RELEASED RECORDINGS)

YOU BOWED DOWN (SINGLE EDIT)
MY MOOD SWINGS (promo Mix)

ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY (LIVE, LOS ANGELES, MAY 13, 1996)
[Live From The Music Hall Volume Three album by various artists]
The title song went unrepresented on the All This Useless Beauty bonus disc despite the availability of this rare solo performance (from Los Angeles radio station KSCA), which was released very briefly on a limited edition CD sold only at Virgin Megastores in the Los Angeles area.

THE BRIDGE I BURNED 4:16 (edit on promo single)
THE BRIDGE I BURNED (FACINO MIX)
["The Bridge I Burned" promo-only CD single]
THE BRIDGE I BURNED (POP LIE MIX)
["The Bridge I Burned" promo-only CD single]
The "Facino mix" (which should probably be spelled "Ficino," since it is named after the philosopher Marsilio Ficino, who is quoted in the song) is a fairly ordinary remix, but the "Pop Lie mix" actually features a completely different set of lyrics over the familiar backing track. Given the obscurity of this promo-only release, the "Pop Lie mix" might have been a better choice for the bonus disc than the more common Extreme Honey version. Hopefully Rhino will find a home for it eventually.

BANG, BANG, BANG
from Al Anderson Pay Before You Pump cd with EC on back vocals

CHRISTIANSANDS
Tricky CD single remixed by EC

WHAT\'S MISSING (UNRELEASED & UNRECORDED)

ALMOST IDEAL EYES (DEMO)
In the March 1994 issue of Musician magazine, writer Bill Flanagan describes the demo sent to David Crosby, "with multilayered \'Déjà Vu\' vocals, If I Could Only Remember My Name harmonies and high \'Carry On\'-like eruptions." Although it is unclear whether the song was submitted for a specific Crosby project, if it was, it was most likely the 1993 album Thousand Roads, which drew heavily from songs by other writers. This would suggest a 1992 or 1993 recording date for the demo.

YOU BOWED DOWN ("SONIC YOUTH VERSION")
Elvis told Mojo in 1996 that he and the Attractions attempted a "Sonic Youth version" of this song ("but it didn\'t work") before settling on the album arrangement.

THAT DAY IS DONE (DEMO) with Paul McCartney
This is not available to collectors, but Elvis mentions its existence in his liner notes for the Fairfield Four\'s I Couldn\'t Hear Nobody Pray: "The unpublished duet demo recording, made that afternoon, remained the closest to the real feeling I had for singing the song until I attempted to perform it with the Fairfield Four in London." This was probably recorded in 1987.

DIRTY ROTTEN SHAME
This song was apparently dropped from consideration for All This Useless Beauty when Ronnie Drew decided to record it. Although it was reportedly not attempted during the album sessions, a professionally recorded live performance at the Beacon Theatre certainly exists. The fact that this song did not turn up on Rhino\'s bonus disc may indicate that Elvis still hopes to record the song properly in the future.

PUT AWAY FORBIDDEN PLAYTHINGS
UNWANTED NUMBER
Although there is no real evidence to suggest that these songs were ever under consideration for the album, both were written for other artists and performed live at 1995-1996 concerts that were professionally recorded.

LESSON IN CRUELTY
PASSIONATE FIGHT
FAR FROM THE PRIZE
Elvis may still intend to record these songs, all of which were premiered in concert in 1995 or 1996. Of the three, only "Passionate Fight" has seen an official release, in a version by Ute Lemper.

THE BRIDGE I BURNED (WITH "POP LIFE" QUOTES)
The original recording of "The Bridge I Burned" interpolated four lines of lyrics from Prince\'s "Pop Life." When Prince refused permission for this version to be released, Elvis replaced them with a quotation from Marsilio Ficino. Although Rhino did attempt to include the original version on the reissue, permission was again refused. Another possible outtake from the session for "The Bridge I Burned" was mentioned in Melody Maker by drummer Danny Goffey, who described jamming with Elvis on John Lennon\'s "Instant Karma!" It is unclear whether this was a full-fledged performance of that song or just a bit thrown into a version of "The Bridge I Burned." Elvis had described his prior live performances of "Pop Life" as being "in the style of \'Instant Karma,\'" which presumably explains why that song would be on his mind during the session.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? (EXPLICIT VERSION) with Burt Bacharach
[download-only single]
Elvis does most of the singing on this song (written by Bacharach and Tonio K) from Burt\'s 2005 album. The song was originally recorded with Elvis singing the closing line as "See things really have to change or we\'re all fucked," but the lyric was toned down to "See things really have to change before it\'s too late" on the album. The original "explicit version" was made available from online download services (including iTunes and Yahoo! Music) in February 2006.

The Painted From Memory compilation stretches over a period of 9 years starting with the first collaboration "God Give Me Strenght", then the rest of the album a full two and a half years later, next is Sessions At West 54th as well as severak live shows. I\'ve also added the 2005 collaboration "Who Are These People?".

Watercamp Notes:
Previously the compilations have been collections of recordings grouped chronologically around the main album of the period.
The 1990-2000\'s saw EC working on some projects as in the past, while returning to others over a period of years.
Moving forward the compilations will reflect this change by combining chronology and theme.
The When I Was Cruel compilation stretches over a period of 4 years starting with some side projects and live recordings, then the Anne Sofie von Otter For The Stars, then comes When I was Cruel and the Cruel Smile singles-remixes-live compilation, finally the live show..
Special note, every US and Canadian copy of the When I was Cruel cd I have heard is brikwalled to shit and sounds distorted, anyone that has a better recording (vinyl? Japanese cd?) is welcomed to upload it please.

UNRELEASED & UNRECORDED

TEAR OFF YOUR OWN HEAD (IT\'S A DOLL REVOLUTION) (DEMO)
Elvis\' original demo for "Tear Off Your Own Head (It\'s A Doll Revolution)" leaked to the Internet in June 2001, long before the April 2002 release of When I Was Cruel. It was recorded with Autolux drummer Carla Azar. The song was originally intended for The Arc Angels, a proposed TV series co-created by Costello and writer John Mankiewicz, and the leak may been the result of the show being shopped around to various networks. (Also leaking in the summer of 2001 was another demo, sung by Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles and apparently intended for use on the TV show. The Bangles would release a finished version of the song in 2003.)

HONEYHOUSE (CRUEL NO. 2) (EXTENDED VERSION)
Several months prior its official release, Elvis featured the newly remixed "When I Was Cruel No. 2" during his May 17, 2002 appearance on Nic Harcourt\'s Morning Becomes Eclectic radio program (broadcast on KCRW in Santa Monica, CA). This differs slightly from the official release, in that it begins at full volume rather than fading in and runs about 20 seconds longer. (I believe this was actually premiered on a different radio show shortly before the one on Morning Becomes Eclectic, but I have not been able to confirm the details.)

THIS SUBDUES MY PASSION
JELLY ROLL
SELF PORTRAIT IN THREE COLORS
DON\'T BE AFRAID, THE CLOWN\'S AFRAID TOO
These Mingus songs with new lyrics by Costello have yet to receive an official release and presumably have never been formally recorded. "This Subdues My Passion" is the earliest of the Mingus/Costello collaborations, having been premiered by Elvis and the Mingus Big Band in 1997. The others were first performed with the Charles Mingus Orchestra in 2001. (The last of the Costello/Mingus tunes, "Hora Decubitus," is scheduled for release in 2006 on the Costello/Metropole Orkest live album My Flame Burns Blue.)

MISSING RELEASED

SPOOKY GIRLFRIEND (THE MOUNTAIN VERSION)
[On The Mountain 8 album by various artists]

ADDITIONAL NOTES

When Liverpool singer-songwriter Steven Kennedy visited Dublin\'s Windmill Lane Studios in July 2001 to provide background vocals for three songs on When I Was Cruel, he and Costello also recorded the song "Autopilot" for Kennedy\'s album Control Freak. Elvis co-produced and contributed backing vocals and guitar and receives a rather prominent "featuring Elvis Costello" credit next to the song title on the back cover, but this track is not listed above because I do not consider it a Costello performance. Kennedy\'s CD seems to have received extremely limited distribution.

"ANOTHER VERSION OF NORTH"
In an interview in the October 2009 issue of British GQ, Elvis spoke of "another version of North. One that I recorded when I was, if you like, at my wits\' end. I went into the studio above Steinway Hall on 57th Street [in New York]. I played the piano myself. It was Erroll Garner\'s piano, and it was practically impossible to play I stumbled through the songs. The result actually does sound like a man on the edge. ... But if I\'d put that out, I think the idiots who wrote those \'it\'s a Dean Martin record\' reviews would have seen the common ground with the raw songs in my catalogue." He said he chose not to release this version "because North wasn\'t all about desolation. It was also about renewal. I know that album is a very difficult listen. But North is exactly what it is supposed to be." The Brodsky Quartet\'s Paul Cassidy was presumably referring to this version when he described the North demos in Graeme Thomson\'s Costello biography Complicated Shadows: "These songs were the most extraordinary thing you\'ve ever heard. Sixteen tracks of him on an old pub piano. Massive. I\'d never heard Elvis like that. I\'d never heard anything like it." It is possible the reference to "sixteen tracks" is only an approximation, but that is one more song than the 15 known to have been considered for North (the 11 which made the album plus "Impatience," "Too Blue," "North," and "Either Side Of The Same Town").

EITHER SIDE OF THE SAME TOWN (EARLY VERSION)
An early draft of "Either Side Of The Town" was among the songs considered for North. A solo composition at the time, the song would soon be reworked with co-writer Jerry Ragovoy for Howard Tate\'s 2003 album Rediscovered, and it was that version which Elvis recorded the next year for The Delivery Man. An arrangement by Paul Cassidy of the earlier draft was included in Elvis\' concerts with the Brodsky Quartet in 2006 and 2009. The early version was very likely part of the alternate North described above, but it is unclear whether the song was attempted during the proper album sessions, at which point the song may have already been rewritten.

[COLD MOUNTAIN OUTTAKES]
Although specific titles are not available, Elvis recorded at least two traditional Civil War-era songs for possible use in the film Cold Mountain. Ultimately his songs went unused in favor of Jack White\'s versions of similar material. (All was not lost for Elvis, however. Alison Krauss\' recording of "The Scarlet Tide," the song he and T Bone Burnett wrote especially for the film, played over the end credits and earned its composers an Oscar nomination.)

CAN YOU BE TRUE? (ALTERNATE VOCAL)
As is typically the case with albums in the 21st century, North leaked online several weeks prior to its release. Strangely, the leaked version of "Can You Be True?" included a slightly different lyric, with Elvis singing the final line as "you may be my man" instead of the album\'s "I may be your man."

ADDITIONAL NOTES

North was also released in the SACD format, featuring a 5.1 mix of the entire album. No bonus tracks were included.

The North compilation is a one off project with only 5 bonus tracks.
I have include; Il Sogno, Piano Jazz and My Flame burns Blue because they are from the same time period and don\'t fit the theme of The Delivery Man compilation.
Likewise a few side projects from this time period will be added to The Delivery Man.because they do fit the theme.

THE MONKEY
[The Delivery Man Japanese bonus track; also on The Delivery Man vinyl edition, "Monkey To Man" CD single and The Clarksdale Sessions]
Co-producer Dennis Herring plays guitar on this cover of Dave Bartolomew\'s song, to which "Monkey To Man" is the unauthorized sequel. Although they are all the same basic performance, the version on The Clarksdale Sessions and The Delivery Man: Deluxe Edition ends with a crossfade into the next track, while the Japanese CD, vinyl edition, and "Monkey To Man" CD single have a "clean" fadeout.

UNRELEASED & UNRECORDED

LOVE THAT BURNS (STUDIO VERSION)
An account of the Clarksdale session on studio owner Jimbo Mathus\' former website (and preserved on the Internet Archive) mentions the recording of "an old Peter Green song" with Mathus joining in on guitar. This song is almost certainly "Love That Burns."

BUTTON MY LIP (UNEDITED)
Elvis told Entertainment Weekly\'s Chris Willman that the released take of "Button My Lip" originally ran a little over nine minutes, but it was edited down to a little under five for the album.

SUSPECT MY TEARS
BURNT SUGAR IS SO BITTER
Several unrecorded tunes were performed during Costello & Nieve\'s 1999 Lonely World Tour. Many of them — "45," "Alibi," "When I Was Cruel," "Oh Well," "Soul For Hire," "Heart Shaped Bruise," and "I Dreamed Of My Old Lover" — have since been recorded and officially released, but the rest have either been abandoned or continue to wait for a future project. In fact, "Suspect My Tears" and "Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter" were revived at the concerts which immediately preceded the recording sessions for The Delivery Man, but it is unclear whether they were actually attempted in the studio. "Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter" was co-written with Carole King.

I\'LL WATCH OUT FOR YOU
Elvis premiered this ballad at one of the Memphis concerts (the April 17, 2004 early show) coinciding with the recording of The Delivery Man. Not only did it not appear on the album, it has never been heard from again!

COMIN\' HOME BABY with Nancy Sinatra
A duet with Nancy Sinatra on this Bob Dorough/Ben Tucker song (recorded by Mel Tormé, among others) was planned for her 2004 self-titled album, but it failed to make the final cut because, according to Sinatra, "there wasn\'t enough time to wait for Elvis Costello to do his vocal." Although she speculated that it could appear on iTunes or a followup album, it has yet to materialize and may still be awaiting Elvis\' vocal.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Elvis first mentioned The Delivery Man in his 1999 concerts as the title of a song cycle he was writing. He played two of its songs ("I Dreamed Of My Old Lover" and "Heart Shaped Bruise") and at one point (October 27 in Nashville) even recited part of the unfinished story, including some lyrics which later turned up in "The Delivery Man" and "Episode Of Blonde." Elvis was always unclear about whether he planned to turn this story into a concept album or a stage production or something else entirely. The eventual album The Delivery Man downplayed the original concept by alternating between the story\'s songs ("Button My Lip," "Country Darkness," "There\'s A Story In Your Voice," "The Delivery Man," ""Nothing Clings Like Ivy," "The Name Of This Thing Is Not Love," "Heart Shaped Bruise") and unrelated material. Additionally, the story\'s songs were presented out of sequence, and at least one key song ("I Dreamed Of My Old Lover") was left unreleased for the time being. (There is no evidence that it was even attempted during this period. It was finally released on Secret, Profane & Sugarcane in 2009.) The original story actually developed from a character in "Hidden Shame" (released in demo form on Rhino\'s All This Useless Beauty and re-recorded for Secret, Profane & Sugarcane), but it is unclear whether the song was ever intended as part of the song cycle. It is possible that additional songs remain unreleased. As a full production of The Delivery Man seems unlikely at this distance, perhaps the most likely vehicle to present the full story would be a collection of Elvis\' demos for the project.

A Pretenders website reported in September 2004 that Elvis and Chrissie Hynde had recorded a version of Bread\'s "Everything I Own" for the film Happy Feet. The eventual film (released in 2006) did include a Chrissie Hynde cover of "Everything I Own" on its soundtrack, but it had no apparent Elvis involvement.
